The Charge of the Camerons by Andrew Hillhouse
N/AQuick Overview
A1 Poster by Andrew Hillhouse: The dawn march allowed the Jacobite army to form to the east of the British, but Cope's forces succeeded in forming their lines before the attack. As the sky brightened, the left wing of the Jacobite army began the charge. The Camerons, whose striped flag is visible, braved the fire of Cope's cannons before overwhilming both the guns and the artillery guard. The Stewarts of Appin, identifiable by their yellow saltire, are charging at the yellow facings of Lee's Regiment. The most exposed units on the Biritsh right began to break first, whilst the centre performed better. At close range their musket volleys were deadly; but they could not hold back the attack. To the rear, Sir John Cope exhorts his men to stand firm. Further back stands the solitary thorntree where Colonel Gardiner will make his last stand, and the estate walls which block the retreat.
