• Jacobite Traitor

    Quick Overview

The Jacobite Traitor -Coll MacDonell and the Prince is written by Alasdair Roberts and Valerie Cameron Smith.

Coll MacDonell belonged to the strongly Jacobite Glengarry branch of Clan Donald.  Before the 1745 Rising was provoked by Bonnie Prince Charlie, who'd arrived in Scotland without the promised French support, Coll had already equipped his followers with the latest targes who were subsequently known as the Brarisdale Regiment.  They fought well at Prestonpans and Falkirk and campaigned as far north as the Pentland Firth.

But Coll MacDonell has long been regarded as a traitor because he 'agreed' to help government troops capture the fugitive Prince after Culloden.  It is very likely, however, that deliberately misleading information actually helped him to escape.  Neither side forgave!

Reaching France he was imprisoned by Jacobites and on his release and return the Hanoverians in Scotland did likewise.  Coll died in solitary confinement at Edinburgh Castle.

A descendant, Christian Cameron, enlisted the help of Crofters' MP Charles Fraser-Macintosh in an early attempt to clear Coll's name but died when a book was at the galley proof stage.  This new collaboration completes the task.
